Spring 2008 Meeting Summary (selection from the NEMLA Newsletter -June 2008, no. 158)
March 17, 2008
Tufts University
Medford, MA
The members of NEMLA gathered at Tufts to enjoy the warm spring day and a program filled with plans for the future of both librarianship and the organization. The day started with pastries and beverages in the Music Center and followed with the business meeting. Under discussion were the announcements of new Board members, a call for future meeting locales, and a proposal for a chapter gift to the national organization as a tribute to the recently deceased Suki Sommer, the details of which will be worked out by the Board.
The morning session focused on various online technologies that are available and that may be used by music librarians. Alec McLane presented for both himself and Joy Pile on a comparison of Wikipedia and subscription resources, such as Grove Music Online. Ned Quist followed with a discussion on open source and copyleft. The last speaker of the morning was Darwin Scott on Web 2.0. Tours of the Granoff Music Center and Lilly Music Library were conducted prior to lunch.
After lunch, members regrouped for sessions devoted to strategic NEMLA planning. Members split into three groups which focused on the areas of Committee Structure, Organizational Objectives, and Membership. After an hour, the groups came together to share and discuss their ideas. Michael Rogan compiled the results, and forwarded them to the Board for consideration. The results are also available here in the current newsletter.
The day concluded with a concert by the Longy String Quintet and a reception.
